Noise floor: what it means

The noise floor is a stock’s own normal level of online conversation, measured over its previous 30 days. Today’s activity is expressed as a multiple of it: 1.0× is a normal day, 2.0× is twice the usual level.

Why the noise floor matters

Raw post counts mislead. Apple is discussed every hour of every day; a small company may go a week without a post. Ten posts is nothing for one and a lot for the other. Measuring each stock against itself is what lets a reading say “unusually loud” with a straight face, and it is step 1 in how to tell if stock hype is real.

How stocksonar measures the noise floor

  • Each platform is read against its own 30-day history. Reddit and X are weighted equally, so a platform with far more posts cannot drown out the other.
  • A platform joins the multiple only after 30 complete days of its own history; until then the record says which platform the figure comes from.
  • Bluesky and YouTube are shown beside it as context and do not move it.
  • Records chart activity against the normal over 24 hours, 72 hours, 7 days and 30 days. Buzzing Now ranks stocks by this multiple and nothing else.

A real reading: on 3 Nov 2026 Apple (AAPL) ran at 7.5× its noise floor over 24 hours, with Reddit at 56.5× its normal hourly rate at the peak. Costco (COST) the same day was at 1.9×. The AAPL case study shows what the rest of that record said.

What the noise floor is not

A high multiple says the stock is being talked about far more than usual. It says nothing about whether that talk is genuine: that is the job of the behaviour checks, which decide between organic discussion and coordinated posting. AAPL at 7.5× was still read as organic. Nor is it a comparison with the market, or a view on the stock itself.

Questions

What does 2.0× the noise floor mean?

Twice the stock’s own normal level of conversation for that window, measured against its previous 30 days.

Is a high multiple a warning sign?

Not by itself. It says the stock is unusually discussed. Whether the discussion behaves normally is a separate question answered by the behaviour checks.
